A calm, sweet gentle giant, your Deerhound will find a favourite spot on your couch. For the happiest pet around, take them to the park every day. They are wonderful family pets.
Deerhounds have been used in Australian since colonial times and were used to hunt Kangaroos for their meat. They are gentle giants and sight hounds so keep them away from small animals like Guinea Pigs. They love to chase any moving animal so keep them leashed when outside.
Highly intelligent and eager to please, your Deerhound will be high-fiving you in no time at all. They are easy to train and loyal family pets. Slow and sweet, they are great with children and friendly to other pets provided they are socialised from a young age. Their giant size not withstanding, Deerhounds aren’t great watchdogs. They rarely bark and don’t get excited by guests at the door. They might even sleep through a party. While they can be sleepy, lazy dogs, long daily walks are ideal for this pet.
Fun fact: They are fast dogs and can run more than 60kph.
Large dwellings with a yard suit their big size, however they are very relaxed and calm and enjoy snuggles on the couch. Deerhounds don’t need a vigorous exercise plan, just a good romp at the park daily will keep them happy. Groom your Deerhound by brushing their coat once a week. They shed little.
Scheduled six-monthly health checks and visits to the vet are important to ensure your dog is healthy and happy throughout all life stages. It’s important that together with your vet a preventative healthcare program is determined and maintained based on the individual needs of your canine companion. Deerhounds are prone to bloat and liver shunt.
