Famously known as the stars of 101 Dalmatians, this breed is incredibly energetic and lively, not to mention super cute.

49-dalmation

Just bring one Dalmatian home and their inexhaustible energy and stamina will make you think you’ve got a hundred and one! One of the most distinctive breeds, these spotted clowns are lively, happy and love human companionship. Just make sure they are given enough exercise and stimulation, especially in the first few years, or they could become highly strung and dig craters in your manicured garden out of boredom.

Dalmatians need a strong leader to train them. Dalmatians are smart, but stubborn and wilful if not handled by a firm, assertive and confident owner who loves being out and about as much as they do. Dalmatians are not born with spots; they are born snow white and develop their spots at four weeks.

Fun fact: Dalmatians were traditionally used to accompany

horses that pulled carriages, as they befriended the horse

and kept them calm on long journeys.

Given their enormous vigour and strength, Dalmatians do not make worthy couch companions. They suit a home with a yard. Schedule brisk walks or ideally runs, a few times a day in your diary. They do not do well being in the cold. Provide ample physical and mental stimulation and you’ll have a happy pet at hand.

Dalmatians are a clean breed, not giving off any odour and they even avoid puddles. They shed all year round, even more so twice a year. Their hair is known to weave itself into carpet, clothing or any kind of fabric. A weekly grooming with a hound mitt or comb can help lessen the shed hair, but nothing can really prevent shedding completely.

Scheduled six monthly health check visits with your vet are important to ensure that your dog is healthy and happy throughout all life stages. Dalmatians are prone to blindness and a lack of pigmentation around their eyes and nose. Together with your vet, you can determine and maintain a preventative health care program based on the individual needs of your canine companion.
