Moving days can be stressful for the whole family, and this includes our pets. Here’s how to keep your pet safe and happy come moving day.

Between boxing up your life, hiring a removalist and coordinating the kids, moving house can be messy. Pets are sensitive souls and can often tell when their families are feeling anxious, which can affect their health and wellbeing. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to ensure your pet stays happy when moving.

First steps

A stable environment will help your pet stay comfortable amongst the chaos of moving day, so keep this in mind when making your preparations. In the weeks and days beforehand, ensure there’s a safe space for your pet to retreat to when feeling overwhelmed, such as a crate, kennel or bed, and stick to their routine as much as you can. If possible, it’s also a good idea to introduce them to their new neighbourhood early. If you have a dog, try taking them for walks and getting to know other pets and their parents at the local park. That way your pet will be able to get their bearings and even make friends before moving in – and so will you!

On the big day

On the big day your house will be turned upside-down with removalists and helpers carrying heavy boxes and furniture through the open front door. As you can imagine, this is not an ideal environment for your pet. Try to arrange a stay with trusted friends, family or at a trusted boarding kennel or cattery, such as Petbarn Hotel. It’s the same for small animals, as loud, unfamiliar noises and excessive movement are likely to make them anxious. If your pet is safe and happy elsewhere, then you’ll be able to get on with the business of moving house without having to worry about their wellbeing.

Getting settled

Settling in to a new house can be daunting even for us humans, so it’s important to be patient and encouraging when introducing your pet to their new home. As before moving house, ensure your pet has a safe space to retreat to, and fill it with their favourite toys and blankets. It’s a good idea to refrain from washing your pet’s bedding for up to one week after moving house, as this will ensure they are surrounded by a familiar scent. For dogs and cats that are having trouble settling in, a pheromone-based spray such as Feliway (for cats) or Adaptil (for dogs) will help them feel more comfortable in their new environment.
