Queen Elizabeth loves Corgis, if you do too, maybe it’s what you always suspected – you belong to a royal lineage. Highly intelligent and loyal, Corgis are willing to do whatever it takes to put a smile on your face. They are protective and strong with a bark to match, making them good watchdogs. While they are good with children, their strong herding instinct means you’ll find them at the family heels, which the littlest members will either love or loathe. Be firm, consistent and determined while teaching them the do’s and don’ts. Pembroke Welsh Corgis are loving and friendly pets but tend to be reserved and polite with guests. Socialise them early to avoid having a shy or timid Corgi. They are great with other family pets however won’t be much interested in befriending unfamiliar dogs at the park. Your Pembroke Welsh Corgi will live for approximately 14 years. This breed has a history of tail-docking and is likely to be born without one.

Fun fact: Folklore says the Corgi is an enchanted dog that

was used in fairy kingdoms as mounts to pull carts or coaches.

Corgis are a lively and energetic breed that needs ample physical and mental stimulation. While they are happiest on farms however a roomy apartment with an outdoor space would be fine too. They need a daily walk if you plan to keep them indoors. Prevent your Corgi from running up and down stairs as a puppy as they are prone to back and joint problems. Corgis have a lovely, low-maintenance double coat – a soft, short, thick and water-resistant undercoat and a longer outer coat. Regular brushing and combing of the coat with a firm bristle brush and an occasional bath and voila, your Corgi will be ready for the paparazzi! Not a fan of vacuuming? Well, Corgis shed only twice a year. Pembroke Welsh Corgis are not hypoallergenic.

Scheduled six-monthly health checks and visits to the vet are important to ensure your dog is healthy and happy throughout all life stages. It’s important that together with your vet a preventative healthcare program is determined and maintained based on the individual needs of your canine companion. Pembroke Welsh Corgis are a relatively healthy breed but are prone to bone and joint problems, hip dysplasia and eye disease.
