Wire Fox Terriers are bold, enthusiastic and playful. They are good with children, but may have a tendency to chase smaller animals. This breed needs constant attention – they have a low threshold for boredom and need to be kept stimulated. They are popular show dogs and are quick and alert, but if they hide you may not be able to seek – Wire Fox Terriers love a great escape and given a chance will run off and not return on command.

They are high-energy dogs so don’t expect them to be your beanbag buddy. Fox Terriers crave human leadership, so show them who’s boss – be firm, assertive and consistent while laying down the rules. Pamper a Wire Fox Terrier too much and you’ll find yourself with a pet who’s loud, stubborn, willful, jealous and destructive.

Fun fact: They were bred to hunt foxes.

‘Sit’ is not a Wire Fox Terrier’s favourite command, not even indoors. They do not need a large yard (ideally yes, but not necessarily), however a few daily walks or a jog are essential. They need to burn off their high energy to be happy. Make sure to have the leash on your buddy whenever you are out. Swimming is another way to spend quality time together.

A regular brushing and an occasional bath will do just fine. For show dogs of course, you’ll have to follow a whole different routine, starting with booking an appointment with a professional groomer. Fox Terriers shed little or no hair.

Scheduled six monthly health check visits with your vet are important to ensure that your dog is healthy and happy throughout all life stages. Together with your vet, you can determine and maintain a preventative health care program based on the individual needs of your canine companion.
