Calling all fitness fanatics – if you’re on the look-out for the world’s best workout buddy, an English Pointer is the dog for you. Tremendously energetic and tireless, their zest for life might find you doing more exercise then you need!

English Pointers are good pets and a perfect addition to a loving, affectionate and loyal family – they are all of that and more. Intelligent and calm, they also adapt easily to new situations and people. From obedience training to tricks, your English Pointer will be quick to learn. We won’t blame you if you invite your neighbour over to show off your well-behaved pup.

Fun fact: The name ‘Pointer’ comes from the stance they adopt

when they catch the scent of prey. They stand tall and erect,

with their body pointing in the direction of the smell.

They are happy to be indoors and don’t mind sharing the remote with you either. Socialise them early, and be firm, assertive and consistent while laying down the rules or they will get wilful and stubborn. Pointers will bark at suspicious noises, though they are not known to be aggressive. They will live 13-14 years.

You cannot give an English Pointer enough exercise. They have abundant stamina and you need to channel it through a daily, vigorous exercise routine. An English Pointer will be happy to run beside you while you bike, jog or walk briskly, for a long while. English Pointers like water too.

Grooming an English Pointer is easy. A regular brushing with a bristle brush and a rub with a grooming mitt and your buddy will be ready for anything. Make sure their feet get a clean-up as well, especially after their exercise routine. Their ears need to be checked regularly too. English Pointers don’t shed much.

Scheduled six monthly health check visits with your vet are important to ensure that your dog is healthy and happy throughout all life stages. Together with your vet, you can determine and maintain a preventative health care program based on the individual needs of your canine companion.
