Bursting with energy and love, a Boxer is ideal for active households.

32-boxer

Boxers are outgoing, energetic, playful and one of Australia’s most-loved breeds. They are good family dogs for those with teenagers or young adults. Babies and toddlers may get overwhelmed by their exuberance. Highly intelligent, playful, curious and eager to learn, they are great at competitive obedience. They love attention and human interaction, so don’t ignore them.

Boxers make excellent watchdogs and are known to be fiercely protective of their family. Positive reinforcement works best on them. They are very intelligent, yet like to be in control, so training is essential in teaching your dog correct behaviour. Boxer dogs are not aggressive but will defend themselves if necessary. They can be territorial so socialise well.

Fun fact: A Boxer holds the record for the

longest tongue in the world at 43cm!

Boxers excel in agility and schutzhund (a demanding three-phase competition event that tests a dog’s tracking, obedience, and protection abilities). Some boxers drool extensively while some snort and snore. Loudly. Given their boisterous nature, Boxers need lots of exercise and the opportunity to run and romp about. Regular walks will help prevent boredom, expel their energy and keep them happy.

They don’t tolerate hot weather and also need protection from the cold. Their coats are easy to care for and will be shiny and bright if they have a good diet and are bathed occasionally. A regular rub-down with a grooming mitt, or brushing with a rubber mitt, and they’ll be as good as new.

Scheduled six monthly health check visits with your vet are important to ensure that your dog is healthy and happy throughout all life stages. Although overall they are a relatively healthy and sturdy dog, common ailments include bone developmental problems, as well as skin, stomach and cardiovascular issues. Together with your vet, you can determine and maintain a preventative health care program based on the individual needs of your canine companion.
