Walking in a straight line

Seeing Eye Dogs need to keep a straight line in the centre of the pavement, this keeps them in the best spot to avoid obstacles and also helps their handler orientate where they are going. Seeing Eye Dogs practice this from when they are a puppy and then do more intensive training in this area when they move onto their formal training.

Kerb stops

Seeing Eye Dogs must learn to stop at every kerb, so that their handler is never put into a dangerous situation. These also help orientation and navigation as well as keeping the handler safe by ensuring the dog stop before entering a road.

Obstacle avoidance

Seeing Eye Dogs are taught to avoid all obstacles that they come into contact with. The dog will allow sufficient space for both themselves and the handler to move around obstacles, even going off the kerb if necessary but finding the straight line again once they are past.

Toileting

Seeing Eye Dogs need to learn to toilet on command so that their handler knows they don’t need to go when they are out and can enter shops and other public places without the dog needing to go to the toilet. This is taught throughout their early training, and built on as they dogs move out of their Puppy Carers home and begin their formal training.

Social behaviour

It is essential that Seeing Eye Dogs are comfortable in a variety of situations and well behaved in the presence of other dogs, animals, people and children. Because of this, SEDA dogs start to become accustomed to a number of different environments and social situations including different sounds, and smell. right from the beginning of their training when they are with their Puppy Carers from the age of 12 weeks.
