All dogs are at risk of contracting parasites that are in our environment, but you can keep your pet safe by regularly providing them with the best flea, tick and worm treatment for dogs.
Regularly treating your dog for parasites is essential to help them lead a happy and healthy life, but it can be hard to know which flea, tick and worm preventative treatments are best for your dog.
The good news is that Petbarn together with Greencross Vets have developed PetWatch, a tool that allows you to assess the parasite risk in your area, and a Flea, Tick, and Worm Treatment Finder tool to identify the exact product combination your dog needs to be fully protected from parasites.
Which parasites do I need to protect my dog from?
Fleas
Fleas are a common concern for pet parents and they have the potential to infest your home in a very short amount of time! That’s a lot of itching and scratching not only for your dog, but also for your family. At Petbarn, we sell a number of effective products that help prevent flea infestations on your dog.

Ticks
Ticks are small parasites that can hide in your dog’s coat and may transmit toxins and bacteria that lead to illness and sometimes death. It is important to know what to do if your dog has a tick and how to prevent them with proper tick treatment.
The most serious of ticks, the paralysis tick, is especially dangerous to dogs (and cats). are often found along the east coast of Australia. When paralysis ticks attach to your dog, they inject toxins which affect your dog’s nervous system, causing progressive paralysis of all muscles, including the chest muscles, the larynx or throat muscles, and the heart. If your dog displays any symptoms of tick paralysis, bring them to your local Greencross Vets or closest emergency vet immediately.
Prevention is much better than cure. Ensure your dog keeps up to date with tick and parasite prevention to keep them safe all year round.

Intestinal worms
Don’t let worms be a worry – ensure that your dog is receiving the correct preventative worming treatment. Australia is home to a range of intestinal worms including hookworms, roundworms, whipworms and tapeworms, which can all cause serious harm without the proper worming prevention for your dog. An infected dog can easily pass these onto children via a friendly kiss, so worming your dog is important for keeping your whole family protected.

Heartworm
Heartworm is a parasite that affects the cardiovascular system of dogs and cats . It is spread through mosquito bites and is responsible for infecting many dogs and some cats each year. The disease is potentially fatal but also completely preventable with a range of preventative worming options.
Ask your local Petbarn team member about over the counter prevention options (typically available as monthly chews or spot ons) or contact your local Greencross Vets about long-lasting prevention options which can protect your dog from this disease for 12 months.
If you can’t remember when your dog last received heartworm prevention, it’s very important to get them tested to ensure they don’t have heartworm before starting a new preventative treatment as most preventatives are not recommended for heartworm-positive dogs.
