Dogs might be covered in fur, but that fur coat doesn’t entirely protect them from the cold. Some dogs need a jumper to help them stay comfortable and warm over winter.

Want to get a jumper for your dog? Read on to learn how to measure your dog so you buy the right size jumper.

What measurements do I need?

There are two measurements you need when figuring out what size of jumper will fit your dog:

  • Back length – this will determine the length of the jumper
  • Chest girth – this will determine how wide the body of the jumper is

Remember: these measurements are a guide and some jumper styles may fit some body shapes slightly differently.

How do I measure my dog for a jumper?

Step 1: Find a flexible tape measure.

Step 2: Have your dog stand on a flat surface and make sure they are relaxed and calm.

Step 3: Measure the length of your dog’s back. Place the start of the tape measure at the base of your dog’s neck and run it along the length of their spine to where their tail starts. Note the length from the base of your dog’s neck to the base of their tail.

Step 4: Measure your dog’s chest girth. Circle the tape measure around the widest part of your dog’s chest. Note the circumference measurement.

Step 5: Compare your dog’s measurements to the size chart of the jumper you want to buy. If your dog is between sizes, choose the larger size for more comfort and room for growth.
