Eye Opening Facts about Vision in Australia

For many of us the thought of losing our vision is not only frightening but something unimaginable. But the reality is that there are over 350,000 people in this country alone who have to live with this every day.

And with our ageing and increasing population, this number is expected to grow to over 560,000 people by 2030.

With this need in mind, the Petbarn Foundation’s partnership with Seeing Eye Dogs Australia (SEDA) continue their fund raising efforts to help raise awareness around low vision and give you tips on what you can do to help.

Here’s what you need to know:

Causes & the impact of low vision

The Causes of low vision include hereditary conditions, eye injuries and eye diseases such as glaucoma and macular degeneration. Whatever the origin, low vision often causes depression and feelings of isolation and helplessness.

Sadly, 58% of Aussies who are vision impaired or have low vision are unemployed despite the fact they want to work.

How You Can Help

If you have a friend or family member with low vision or know others in your community who are blind, remember these three simple ways on how you can give them a hand:

1) Approach: if you suspect someone may need your help, walk up, greet them and identify yourself.

2) Ask: “Would you like some help?” The person will accept your offer or tell you if they don’t require assistance.

3) Assist: listen to the reply and assist as required. Not all people who are blind or have low vision will want assistance – don’t be offended if your assistance is not required.
