Humans are certainly less inclined to exercise in the colder months, but some animals are also known to become lethargic. Here are some tips to keep them fit and healthy despite the winter weather.

1. Rug up

Just like you, your dog could need winter clothing and bedding to help keep them warm during the colder months. Protect their coat from harsh winds with snuggly jackets and Weatherbeeta coats. Petbarn has a great range of winter coats to help keep your dog looking super cute and toasty warm.

2. Sleep first, run later

We love any excuse to sleep in, but with the days getting shorter and sun coming up later it’s a good idea to exercise your pup later in the day when the ground is warmer. The sunshine is also a good vitamin-D hit for both you and your dog. If you can’t work your day around the available sunlit hours, be sure to invest in some reflective collars, leads and high-visibility toys a for your dog to exercise at night.

3. Fetch

Most dogs love a game of fetch and can’t get enough of running back and forth catching a ball. With a throw toy and a bit of space, whether it’s in your backyard, up stairs, down the hallway or at your local park, your pup will have the time of their lives. Not to mention the great arm workout for you.

4. Indoor games

When the weather is too miserable outside, your dog will be able to stretch and run with some fun indoor games. A ball with rope lets them play tug-of-war with themselves or you, an odd-shaped rubber ball will bounce funnily and keep them chasing it wherever it goes and a Kong toy will keep them busy as they try to get the stuffed treats out. Also remember to rotate your dog’s toys – if your dog is inside for a few days at a time, this means they can play with a toy they haven’t seen in a while!

5. Training

Winter is the perfect time to perfect your dog’s training. Stay warm inside and brush up on the basics such as teaching them commands to sit, stay, come and walk. And when they’ve mastered that, teach them to high-five or roll. Not only is it good for them physically but it will also keep them mentally stimulated. And prevent them from running around the house stir-crazy! If you have a puppy, making sure they’re trained is important, so visit Petbarn’s Puppy School for more information.
