Happiness is owning a Wheaten Terrier. Cheerful, extroverted and enthusiastic, there is no one in the world who will greet you at the door as whole-heartedly as a Wheaten Terrier. A Wheaten Terrier’s small size, huggable looks, and their inexhaustible exuberance make them great playmates for children. Ditto for other pets too, if socialised early and well.

For all their friendliness, they are intelligent enough to alert you to people who aren’t in your inner circle. They bark and like to let you know when someone is approaching the house. Wheaten Terriers are smart, yet stubborn, so be firm, confident and consistent when laying down the rules. They suffer from separation anxiety if left alone for long periods. Wheaten Terriers can also be quite messy, bringing dirt into the house and mistaking your couch for a face towel.

Fun fact: Wheaten Terriers are known as one of the happiest dogs in the world!

They also like to walk with their leash in their mouth.

Wheaten Terriers are not fussed about having a house with a yard. They do fine in an apartment, provided they get at least 30 minutes of exercise every day – a walk, a little romp in the park, a game of catch, anything fun as long as it’s not in the heat or rain. They exhibit typical Terrier traits like chasing small animals, so keep your Wheaten leashed.

Unlike most other Terriers, the Wheaten Terrier has a silky, single coat which needs regular grooming. Daily combing, with a medium-toothed comb, is recommended to keep the coat tangle-free, soft and compliment-worthy. Bath only when necessary. Wipe their mouth after each meal to remove food crumbs. Trim their nails and brush their teeth regularly. Wheaten Terriers are hypoallergenic and shed very little to no hair.

Scheduled six monthly health check visits with your vet are important to ensure that your dog is healthy and happy throughout all life stages. Wheaten Terriers are hardy dogs, but can suffer from bone developmental disease, as well as eye problems. Together with your vet, you can determine and maintain a preventative health care program based on the individual needs of your canine companion.
