Bubbly, energetic, lively and fun, a Tenterfield Terrier is a loving and sweet family pet. They get along well with children and the elderly but not small animals like Guinea Pigs or Rabbits.

Both a keen hunter and a loving, loyal companion, a Tenterfield Terrier is a wonderful family pet for children and the elderly alike. Their origins as a hunting dog mean they are strong, active and agile but also sweet, loyal and lively. They are highly intelligent and trainable but like all terriers, need consistent training. They excel in agility trails and fly-ball competitions. With kind, gentle and relaxed training sessions your Tenterfield Terrier will be sitting, jumping and high-fiving in no time at all. Be sure to exercise your dog otherwise it will become destructive and noisy. Your very vocal Tenterfield Terrier will make a great watchdog. Train them well otherwise your neighbour might start complaining with the noise. They are great with children and other canines provided they grow up with them. Don’t leave your terrier with non-canine pets such as rabbits or guinea pigs as it’s in their nature to chase.

A Tenterfield Terrier’ energy knows no bounds so a long daily walk or jog is ideal. Take them to a fenced park for a run off the leash and they’ll be the happiest dog around. While their small size makes them ideal for apartment living, they are happiest when they have a yard to play in. If you exercise your dog enough outside with a big walk, they can adapt to a small space. Tenterfield Terriers shed moderately and are low-maintenance dogs, just brush their coat once a week and bathe monthly.

Scheduled six monthly health checks and visits to the vet are important to ensure that your dog is healthy and happy throughout all life-stages. It’s important that together with your vet a preventative health care program is determined and maintained based on the individual needs of your canine companion. Tenterfield Terriers aren’t prone to many health problems. Overall they are a healthy breed but some can be prone to hypothyroidism and slipping kneecaps.
