Clean, family-friendly and with a gorgeous long coat, a Schnauzer is a welcome addition to any household.01-schnauzer

If you’re looking to raise your household’s average IQ, then the Standard Schnauzer could be the dog for you. They are highly intelligent and will learn commands quite easily. However, they can be quite stubborn too, so make sure you are firm, assertive and consistent when laying down the rules. They are good playmates with children and even cats! But it’s in their nature to chase, so households with rabbits aren’t so great.

With its clever, protective and good-natured temperament, the Schnauzer makes a great watchdog. It tends to be vocal when hearing strange noises, or with unknown guests. They are so popular that a Miniature Schnauzer and Giant Schnauzer have also been bred.

Fun fact: Schnauzers are named after moustaches!

The German word Schnauzer when translated to

English is snout, or more colloquially, moustache.

Agile and athletic, the Standard Schnauzer needs adequate mental and physical stimulation. A daily walk is a must. Invest in balls and toys, as they love retrieving. They are quite active indoors and do not need a yard.

Grooming a Schnauzer isn’t difficult. They are clean dogs, with no doggy odour and they do not shed a lot. Just brush their coat daily and clip it twice a year to keep your mate looking handsome.

Scheduled six monthly health check visits with your vet are important to ensure that your dog is healthy and happy throughout all life stages. Hip Dysplasia is common in old Standard Schnauzers. Together with your vet, you can determine and maintain a preventative health care program based on the individual needs of your canine companion.
