Regal, fun, active and low-shedding, this breed is perfect for those looking for a family pet. They are hard-workers and intelligent, and while they enjoy a lap cuddle, they are not lapdogs.

24-poodle

A well-coiffed Standard Poodle has often found a place as arm-candy for many a Hollywood celebrity or globetrotting socialite. They are a very intelligent breed, as well as being cheerful and pleasant company. Highly energetic, Standard Poodles need to be kept busy and stimulated or they will find their own form of entertainment, which unfortunately may not amuse you.

Eager to please, graceful and fun-loving; they are friendly with strangers and great with children. If socialised early and well, they are good with other pets, too. Be sure to be firm, confident and consistent while training your Standard Poodle.

Fun fact: Elvis was a huge fan of having Poodles as pets.

They make excellent watchdogs, barking obsessively and alerting you of anyone approaching your home. They love being around people and tend to suffer from separation anxiety if left alone for long hours. The Standard Poodle is quite active and agile, and needs a daily walk. They are also aquatic dogs and will be happy to join you in the pool. They are quite inactive indoors, a regular romp in the park or the yard is all they need. If not exercised enough, they tend to get restless, moody and destructive.

The Standard Poodle has a single coat (in black, blue, silver, grey, apricot, white, or brown) which is curly or corded. It needs to be clipped regularly. There are different types of clips, which give Poodles their distinctive look. They will need their ears cleaned for wax and their nails trimmed regularly. A groomer will need to remove any hair from inside the ear canal.

Scheduled six monthly health checks visits with your vet are important to ensure that your dog is healthy and happy throughout all life stages. Common ailments include eye problems, epilepsy and bloat. Together with your vet, you can determine and maintain a preventative health care program based on the individual needs of your canine companion.
