Elegant and dignified, Sloughis are king of the canine world. They are extremely loyal and devoted to their family, as well as being gentle enough playmates for children.

Originating from North Africa, these dogs are the closest canines to royalty there is. Revered by the Bedouin tribesmen and used for many different purposes, they were a prized possession. They are highly devoted to their family, and once attached don’t easily adapt to new people. Their loyalty knows no bounds and their family is their world. Sloughis are also independent and are natural hunters – it’s best to keep them away from small pets and cats. Early socialisation is key to having a good dog. They are highly intelligent and fairly obedient if you start training your Sloughi from a young age. Their sweet and gentle disposition makes them ideal pets for children. They are quiet dogs and don’t bark much. Aloof and reserved, don’t expect your Sloughi to befriend strangers. They tend to be more territorial than most sight hounds.

Fun fact: Sloughis are so highly revered by the Bedouin

tribesmen in Egypt that a mummified body has been discovered in a tomb.

A Sloughi can never have too much exercise. They have excess stamina and will go for much longer than their humans. A long daily walk or run and some time spent off leash in a fenced park is ideal. Once on the scent of game they will never give up. They love an afternoon cuddle so give them a big soft bed to lie on or be prepared to share your side of the couch. They are a super easy dog to look after as they hate getting dirty and will clean themselves. Using a rubber-grooming mitt, gently wipe down the coat weekly. Sloughis shed little.

Scheduled six monthly health checks and visits to the vet are important to ensure that your dog is healthy and happy throughout all life-stages. It’s important that together with your vet a preventative health care program is determined and maintained based on the individual needs of your canine companion.
