They have a mischievous side, but this small yet lively companion is a great pet for families. Silky Terriers are a close cousin to the Yorkshire Terrier.96-silky-terrier

If you’re a jet-setter that misses the family, take along your Silky Terrier – they are easy travelers. They are also affectionate, happy and amiable. Don’t be surprised if you find your buddy becoming your shadow as these guys love being close to their owner. While they are eager to please and train easily, be assertive, firm and consistent when laying down the rules. They need to know who leads the ‘pack’ or they can become stubborn and wilful, barking without reason. Obedience training is great for your Silky Terrier.

Their love of digging, coupled with their inherent curiosity, may mean you come home to a punctured flower bed. Highly intelligent, alert and courageous, they make good watchdogs. However, they are not the best playmates for little children (or small pets).

Fun fact: The Silky Terrier is a toy breed regarded as truly Aussie.

They were nicknamed the ‘Sydney Silky’ due to their prominence in Sydney,

but other breeders in Victoria and Tasmania laid claim to the breed

and their name is now officially the Australian Silky Terrier.

While they are happy to lounge by the TV occasionally, a Silky Terrier does need sufficient exercise. Walks at the park, a romp in the yard, and playing ball in the hallway. Do any of this and your energetic buddy will be happy and healthy.

Grooming a Silky Terrier should be a daily routine as their long coat is very prone to tangles and matting. It grows non-stop, so have it professionally trimmed regularly. Comb and brush it daily, while bathing your buddy every month to ensure compliments. Trim their nails and brush their teeth regularly. The Silky Terrier sheds little to no hair.

Scheduled six monthly health check visits with your vet are important to ensure that your dog is healthy and happy throughout all life stages. Silky Terriers are prone to diabetes, tracheal collapse, cataracts and obesity. Together with your vet, you can determine and maintain a preventative health care program based on the individual needs of your canine companion.
