The elegant and dignified Saluki is a regal and highly energetic breed that needs vigorous daily exercise and a soft bed for cuddles. They are gentle, sweet pets and great for children, but not ideal company for cats.

Skinnier than a Greyhound, a Saluki is long, agile and extremely fast. They are a one-dog family and often choose and cherish one person in particular. Their favourite spot is nestled on a comfy couch by your side. They are devoted, loyal and loving dogs that suit an active household. This slender and elegant breed has bundles of energy and needs hard exercise every day. A vigorous long run is ideal for this breed to stay in peak condition. Be wary when they are off the leash when out as they will take off after anything that moves; your neighbours cat will be scared silly. They have a lack of road sense and see a moving car as an object to chase.

Polite and calm, they are great with children and older people. Don’t expect your dignified Saluki to befriend guests however; they will be aloof and reserved when meeting new people. They are wonderful house guests and have no doggy odour. They can adapt to apartment living, however yard space is ideal. Make sure you have a high fence as they are great jumpers.

Fun fact: The Saluki is one of the first breeds of dog to

come from wolves and have been around for more than 5000 years.

Your Saluki might just take the crown for ‘smartest person in the house.’ They are highly intelligent dogs but also very independent and being sight hounds it is in their nature to chase, which makes recall difficult. Their alertness makes them great watchdogs but they are too placid to be efficient watchdogs. If you’re home often, a Saluki is a great dog for you but beware they can suffer from separation anxiety. Salukis are one of the cleanest dogs around. They shed little hair and their coat looks best when brushed daily. They can live for around 12-14 years.

Scheduled six-monthly health checks and visits to the vet are important to ensure your dog is healthy and happy throughout all life stages. It’s important that together with your vet a preventative healthcare program is determined and maintained based on the individual needs of your canine companion. The Saluki is a strong and healthy breed however some skin or digestive issues can occur.
