Protective, loyal and strong are the defining characteristics of the Rottweiler. They are loving companions when trained properly and they make excellent watchdogs.

Rottweilers looks like tough guys, but with the right training, they can become wonderful family dogs. They are large, strong and athletic in size and shape, with a basic disposition of being good-natured and docile. They are loyal and devoted to their family but are self assured enough to not form friendships easily. Their inherent instinct to protect, their intelligent and fearless nature, and their strong willingness to work make them ideal companions, guardians and family pets.

Rottweilers are a powerful breed that can be trained easily, but they need a firm, confident and strong-minded owner. Given their size and strength, they need ample socialisation and obedience training right from their early years to prevent behavioural issues. Once trained, they make good playmates for children and will accept other pets too.

Fun fact: Despite their size, Rottweilers think they

are perfect lap-warmers. They like to lean against

their family and cuddle.

You cannot give this robust breed enough exercise or work. In fact, they thrive on it. A daily walk – ideally twice a day – is a must. If you’re a couch potato at heart, maybe hold off bringing one home. Rottweilers love swimming, running beside a bicycle, retrieving balls – anything involving activity.

They are not high-maintenance when it comes to grooming. Their thick, smooth, glossy coat (usually black with rust to mahogany markings) is easy to groom. Brush with a firm bristle brush and bath only when necessary. They shed an average amount of hair.

Scheduled six monthly health check visits with your vet are important to ensure that your dog is healthy and happy throughout all life stages. Common ailments include hip dysplasia, heart disease and bloat. Together with your vet, you can determine and maintain a preventative health care program based on the individual needs of your canine companion.
