You know what they say, don’t judge a book by its cover. Pit Bulls are full of love and have a gentle, sweet nature that’s ideal for children. They particularly love their role as a foot warmer.
One of the most grossly misunderstood breeds, Pit Bulls are good-natured, loyal and affectionate. Socialise them well and early, especially with other dogs and children. Pit Bulls are good pets, but their warm and kind disposition makes them poor watchdogs. However, they are devoted and courageous and will defend their family with their lives.
Pit Bulls love life and like to be around their favourite people. Always. They are intelligent, almost always obedient, eager to please and will learn tricks and commands before you can say “sit”. Just remember to be a firm, confident and assertive owner and consistent when laying down the law. Pit Bulls live for 12-14 years.
Fun fact: Pit Bulls are commonly used as therapy dogs and
are often referred to as ‘nanny dogs’, as they are great with children.
A Pit Bull doesn’t need a large house with a yard. They will be happy in your little apartment, provided you promise them a long daily walk. If they have a lack of exercise, you will have a stubborn, moody and destructive pet. They are very active indoors, so lock away the fine china. They do not do well in the cold and would rather curl up on you – yes, on you – by the fireplace.
Pit Bulls have a short, shiny coat (in red, blue, brown, grey, black and white) that is easy to groom. Brush them with a firm brush and rub with a damp cloth and the coat’s sparkle will crack a mirror. Trim their nails and brush their teeth regularly. Pit bulls shed moderately.
Scheduled six monthly health check visits with your vet are important to ensure that your dog is healthy and happy throughout all life stages. Together with your vet, you can determine and maintain a preventative health care program based on the individual needs of your canine companion.
