Loyal, loving and sociable, Pharaoh Hounds know no limits, whether it’s running at the park or snuggling in your bed. They shed little and are gentle with children.

Originally from Malta and known as the ‘rabbit dog’, these tall hunting dogs are graceful and athletic. They are independent but also loyal and loving to their family. They are a sociable breed and thrive when involved in all family activities so don’t leave them alone for long periods of time. Despite being a hound, they are fairly easy to train and often come when called, even when on the scent. Train your dog from a young age and be firm and consistent. Pharaoh Hounds are known for thinking quicker than humans and are usually one step ahead. Their perfect snuggle buddy is a human but they can get along with other dogs if socialised well. Your Pharaoh Hound instinctively wants to chase and hunt cats and other small pets so it’s best not to keep them together. They are highly vocal pets and enjoy barking at every sound. Best suited to large dwellings with a yard.

Fun fact: Pharaoh Hounds are known for their toothy grin

and being able to blush. They have no dark pigments in their skin

and when excited, their ears and nose turn pink.

High energy levels make this dog great for active households. The more exercise you provide, the happier they will be. Don’t give them enough and they will become destructive and bored. Running and jumping (they can jump super high!) are favourite pastimes so make sure you have an adequate fence otherwise they’ll jump right out of the yard.

Pharaoh Hounds live for around 12-14 years. Groom their coat with a grooming mitt to remove loose hairs. They shed little.

Scheduled six-monthly health checks and visits to the vet are important to ensure your dog is healthy and happy throughout all life stages. It’s important that together with your vet a preventative healthcare program is determined and maintained based on the individual needs of your canine companion. They are a relatively healthy breed, although some lines are prone to dislocation of the kneecap.
