Bright, bold and lively, a Lowchen is a fun and affectionate pet to have around the home. They are mild-mannered and get along great with children. They will even befriend other pets and are perfect for families or older couples.137-lowchen

Lowchen, more commonly known as the Lion Dog due to their looks, is a big dog in a small body. They have a big personality and will bring much joy into your home. Sweet, playful and lively, but not hyperactive, your Lowchen will love a good game of tug-o-war and sitting by the windowsill watching for visitors. They love testing their voice and will let you know if someone approaches the house, but their barking can become overwhelming if not controlled.

Peaceful, mild-mannered and gentle, a Lowchen is a great dog for children and is also known to make close friendships with other pets, if brought up together. They are great watch dogs, but are too friendly to be proper protectors, not to mention too small. Lively and active, your Lowchen will benefit from long daily walks. Play with your Lowchen regularly and it will be happy in an apartment. They thrive on human interaction and are known to suffer from separation anxiety.

Fun fact: The Lowchen coat gained its distinctive

shorn look as historically, ladies would use the dog as a

hot water bottle, resting their hands and feet on the shaved skin.

The Lowchen is a bright breed; super easy to train and eager to please, they excel in agility and obedience. Clownish and silly, they often act like puppies for a long time. They have a long coat, although often the back legs, tail and hindquarters are shaved to give them the look of a lion. Brush weekly and apply pet sunscreen to the shaved hair to protect the skin. Lowchen’s shed little and are hypoallergenic.

Scheduled six-monthly health checks and visits to the vet are important to ensure that your dog is healthy and happy throughout all life stages. It’s important that together with your vet a preventative healthcare program is determined and maintained based on the individual needs of your canine companion.
