You needn’t hedge your bets on this one – on any given day, the liveliest, most cheerful and boldest dog in a park will be a Lakeland Terrier. Despite their button-like size, they will happily romp about with breeds of any shape, size or bark decibel.

Lakeland Terriers are intelligent and learn quickly. However they can be difficult to house-train, so keep delicious training treats – and your patience – handy. Use a variety of short challenges and they will learn whatever you want them to. They like to bark. A lot. If not trained firmly and consistently, they can be relentless. They can also become feisty, stubborn and often exhibit ‘selective deafness’ with a mild owner. While they love children, a kitten might be constantly chased. Socialise a Lakeland Terrier early and well with other pets and they will do well together. They live for 13-14 years.

Fun fact: Lakeland Terriers were bred for their ability

to go deep underground and hunt foxes in their lair.

They prefer to live inside and will do well in an apartment, if you provide them with enough exercise. A couple of short, daily walks, jogs or a game of catch in a fenced-in yard, and you’ll have a happy buddy. They like to dig and escape though, so make sure your backyard is securely fenced. A leash is essential while walking to save you from chasing after your Terrier.

They have a double coat consisting of a thick, hard topcoat and a soft undercoat. Pluck or strip the coat a few times a year and brush and comb it regularly to avoid matting. Follow the comb with a rub-down to remove dirt and excess oil. Remove loose hair from their ear and trim excess hair from the pads of their feet. Lakeland Terriers shed little. Bath only if necessary. Trim their nails and brush their teeth regularly. Lakeland Terriers are hypoallergenic.

Scheduled six monthly health check visits with your vet are important to ensure that your dog is healthy and happy throughout all life stages. They are a strong and healthy breed with few reported problems. Trim hair from their ears and eyes to prevent infections. Together with your vet, you can determine and maintain a preventative health care program based on the individual needs of your canine companion.
