Gordon Setters are a huge fan of running, jumping and keeping active. Once is not enough, get out twice daily and you’ll have the most content and loving dog. Apart from their silly, affectionate side, Gordon Setters are also serious, alert and protective. They are extremely loyal and will watch over their family. Don’t expect guests to be treated the same as they will be standoffish at first. They are great watchdogs. Expect your Gordon Setter to announce the arrival of any guests, invited or not.

They are also highly intelligent and want to please their owners; obedience training is highly beneficial. They are strong-willed and have a mind of their own so early consistent training is key. Gordon Setter’s live for 10-13 years.

Separation anxiety is a problem in this breed as they love spending time with their family and thrive with one-on-one attention. Introduce other pets when young otherwise your Gordon Setter won’t take kindly to them. They have a moderate tendency to bark. Large dwellings with yard space is ideal for this pet as they need space to run around in. Gordon Setters shed little. Brush and comb their coat twice a week. Clean the ears regularly to prevent infections and trim hair between the pads of the feet.

Scheduled six-monthly health checks and visits to the vet are important to ensure that your dog is healthy and happy throughout all life stages. It’s important that together with your vet a preventative healthcare program is determined and maintained based on the individual needs of your canine companion. Gordon Setters are prone to bloat, hip dysplasia and eye problems such as blindness.
