Has your toast disappeared off the table? No, there’s no food thief hiding in the cupboards, it’s just your Cesky Terrier. This breed has a great sense of smell and a strong love for food that will have them stealing anything lying around. Don’t be fooled by their short height either – they can stand on their hind legs and stretch out to reach that high spot on the bench.

Calmer than most terriers, they have a laid-back, relaxed disposition that makes them ideal pets for children. They are playful and lively and enjoy playing games. They also like to show off their strong bark and have a tendency to be very vocal. You don’t have to give up the TV remote, but a daily stroll will do wonders for your Cesky. A morning jog will make them happy and healthy. Ideal for any type of dwelling, your Cesky Terrier will adapt to apartment living very easily. They are prone to separation anxiety though and don’t like being left alone for left periods of time.

Fun fact: Originally from Czechoslovakia, these dogs fit the ‘exotic’ bill

and are darlings of the country. They feature on postcards and

postage stamps and in television and movies.

They are highly intelligent and easy to handle when training. Socialise them well when they are young for a well-mannered pet. Introduce the cat at a young age too and they are sure to be best mates. Cesky Terrier’s shed little hair but need regular grooming to maintain their coat. Trim it every three months leaving the hair long on the stomach, legs and face. Comb it twice a week to prevent tangling and bathe monthly.

Scheduled six-monthly health checks and visits to the vet are important to ensure that your dog is healthy and happy throughout all life stages. It’s important that together with your veterinarian a preventative healthcare program is determined and maintained based on the individual needs of your canine companion. This is a very healthy breed and isn’t prone to many diseases.
