Canaans make wonderful family pets. They are loyal, devoted and sweet-tempered dogs that are happy when snuggled by your feet or playing games in the park.

Canaans love fetch so much, they have been known to retrieve a ball a hundred times in a row. You can expect your fitness level to increase as they are active dogs that need a moderate amount of exercise. Daily runs are ideal. If bored, your Canaan will dig up the yard and be very vocal – you may need to gift earmuffs to your neighbour. Canaans are smart dogs and highly intelligent. They love agility, tracking, herding and playing games. Teach your dog lots of tricks to keep it happy and healthy. Canaans are highly intelligent and smart dogs who will quickly learn new commands, however they are also very dominant and enjoy testing your will – not great for novice dog owners. Canaans live for approximately 12-15 years.

Extremely loyal and highly devoted, you can expect unwavering love from this breed. Their family is the centre of their universe and while nothing makes them happier than a belly rub from their owner.

Canaans tend to be self-reliant. They won’t stick to your side like Velcro. They are social dogs and enjoy being with a large family and get along brilliantly with other dogs. They make great family pets and even love youngsters. Socialise your dog from a young age to encourage its friendly nature when meeting new people and new pets. They have no doggy odour and are heavy seasonal shedders so keep that vacuum cleaner out. Canaans are not hypoallergenic.

Scheduled six-monthly health checks and visits to the vet are important to ensure that your dog is healthy and happy throughout all life stages. It’s important that together with your vet a preventative healthcare program is determined and maintained based on the individual needs of your canine companion. Canaans are a relatively healthy breed but can be prone to epilepsy and hypothyroidism.

Cannans are a medium-sized breed weighing 15-25kgs and standing 50-60cm tall.

The equivalent of a gym-bunny, they love a good workout but also love napping. Daily runs and lots of games are ideal for keeping this breed fit.

Coat and grooming needs

This breed is low maintenance. They have a dual coat – the under coat is soft and thick, while the outer is straight and harsh. Their coat is white with a mask in shades of black through to brown. Or solid-coloured in shades of black to brown with or without white trim. Brush weekly and trim occasionally.

Shedding

They shed moderately all year round, and heavily during moulting season.

Tendency to bark

They have a moderate tendency to bark so expect some conversation.
