The Brittany Dog is the national dog of France and since the 70’s has developed a strong and loyal following in Australia. It’s easy to see why – they are peaceful, sweet-tempered and kind. Obedient, eager to please, happy and alert, spending time with their family is the greatest joy in a Brittany Dog’s life. Your Brittany will always be up for a run in the park and snuggle on the couch afterward. They need long vigorous bouts of exercise and have great stamina – you will be outrun by miles. Long brisk walks and a good romp in the park make for one happy dog. If caught up indoors or not exercised enough, they will become hyperactive and unstable so they are best suited to a house with a yard.

Fun fact: Brittany Dogs were referred to as Brittany Spaniels

until it was dropped in the 80’s as Brittany Dog’s didn’t

hunt in the way that spaniels do. Instead, they are versatile hunters

being good on both land and water.

Their calm disposition means they are wonderful pets for young children to grow up with. They’ll even befriend others dogs and cats if brought up together. They have a great sense of smell and will take to sniffing every pole and tree around. They also tend to whine when excited or stressed. Your dog needs to be socialised properly otherwise it will be timid and shy. They are so loving and gentle that intruders can expect to be licked, not barked at. Brittany Dogs shed little so you can store that brand-new vacuum cleaner away. They are low maintenance and a gentle brush down of their coat twice a week is enough to keep it clean and healthy.

Scheduled six-monthly health checks and visits to the vet are important to ensure your dog is healthy and happy throughout all life stages. It’s important that together with your vet a preventative healthcare program is determined and maintained based on the individual needs of your canine companion. Brittany Dogs can be prone to hip dysplasia, cleft palate and hypothyroidism.
