70-beauceron

Croissants, cheese, wine and macaroons – so many great things come from France, including the beautiful Beauceron. Originally bred to guard and herd sheep, they are an extremely active, gentle and intelligent dog. They are strong-willed yet smart, so consistent training is key. They may not be ideal for first-time pet owners. However, their sweet disposition makes them great with children and a wonderful family pet or loyal companion. They love you so much they prefer not to share you and may not befriend other pets.

Animals such as cats and hamsters are high on the ‘catch’ list, so keep Beaucerons away from small pets they can chase. Beware strangers and random dogs at the park too – a Beauceron tends to be wary and won’t take very well to unfamiliar faces. They love to be indoors, keeping a protective and loving eye on their family, while also having access to a yard to expend their endless supply of energy.

Fun fact:A Beauceron received a medal of commendation for

heroic acts searching for people after the September 11 attacks in New York.

Found a new walking track? Great, take your Beauceron along too. They are full of energy and love going for a nice long run or play at the park. However, if you walk too slowly you may find them gently pushing you faster. While cute, discourage this behaviour. Teach them lots of tricks to keep them mentally stimulated. It will also prevent them from getting bored and being destructive. They have a short coat that’s easy to care for. Just brush your Beauceron weekly.

Scheduled six monthly health check visits with your vet are important to ensure that your dog is healthy and happy throughout all life stages. Together with your vet, you can determine and maintain a preventative health care program based on the individual needs of your canine companion.
