Don’t be fooled, that’s not Thorpedo in the water, its your buddy, the fearless American Water Spaniel. These dogs are skilled swimmers, have a water-resistant double coat and the energy of a two-year-old at a birthday party – it never ends. They love playing fetch and will keep going until your arm falls of. Take your buddy running, cycling or walking. With plenty of daily exercise, you will have a great family companion that won’t chew your carpet.

American Water Spaniels have a sweet gentle nature, so you don’t have to worry about young children or the family cat. This breed gets along brilliantly with other animals. A yard is ideal, as nothing makes them happier than a quick romp before dinner. If you work from home, your pet will relish the opportunity to spend time with you. However if you don’t, be sure to give your pet plenty of love, affection and opportunity to exercise, otherwise your neighbour might complain of a very loud and destructive dog.

Fun fact: American Water Spaniels are made to swim.

They have webbed feet to power them through the water and a

double coat that keeps them warm in freezing water.

Highly intelligent, American Water Spaniels like to act from instinct and may not listen to your commands. Be consistent with their training for a well-behaved pet. While they might dote over their family, don’t expect them to take to strangers. They are also known to play favourites, so be sure to give them plenty of belly rubs and play lots of games to stay number one. They have a moderate tendency to bark and are easy to groom, just brush their coat down weekly. American Water Spaniels shed lightly year-round and heavily during moulting season. You may notice some doggy odour.

Scheduled six monthly health check visits with your vet are important to ensure that your dog is healthy and happy throughout all life stages. Together with your vet, you can determine and maintain a preventative health care program based on the individual needs of your canine companion.
