Regal and dignified, you’ve be forgiven for thinking this breed stems from aristocracy. But they actually come from much more humble origins, being used to chase game across mountainous terrain in Afghanistan, Pakistan and northern India. They are skilled hunters, but are also ideal family pets. They are people-orientated and very devoted to their family. You may find them at your heel as they are eager to spend time with you.

While not aggressive, they are aloof to strangers and don’t care to spend time getting to know them. They are great with children and other pets though – just remember to socialise them when they’re young or they may show signs of timidness. Afghan Hounds are smart, but highly strung and stubborn, which may hinder training. Be consistent and soon you’ll have a well behaved puppy.
