Outgoing, charming, lively and spirited you’ll wonder how you ever lived without an Affenpinscher. They are wonderful family pets and hypoallergenic.
Affectionately nicknamed ‘the monkey dog’ due to their appearance, this mischievous, charming dog will have the family in fits of giggles. They are quirky and spirited little dogs who show great affection for their family. The more time they can spend with you the happier they are. Affenpinschers have many terrier characteristics including being sensitive, proud and not taking kindly to being teased. They get along wonderfully with children but make sure your pet isn’t poked and prodded in a way they dislike. You can even get another cat as Affenpinschers, if socialised from a young age, will befriend all other pets (except rodents as it’s in their nature to hunt small animals).
Fun fact: Affenpinschers will walk around on their back legs just for fun!
Affenpinschers are highly intelligent dogs and responds well to calm, patient training. They also make great watchdogs and will alert you to every noise. Non-invited guests beware, an Affenpinscher will let you know you’re not welcome by constant loud barking. Invited guests need not worry though. If you enjoy a gentle daily stroll around the park but not much more, an Affenpinscher is the dog for you. They also enjoy playing games. An apartment suits this dog just fine but make sure you take your dog for a daily workout to keep them happy. Their coat is naturally untidy looking so grooming is super easy. Groom your Affenpinscher by brushing weekly to remove dead hairs. Affenpinschers shed little and are hypoallergenic.
Scheduled six-monthly health checks and visits to the vet are important to ensure your dog is healthy and happy throughout all life stages. It’s important that together with your vet a preventative healthcare program is determined and maintained based on the individual needs of your canine companion. Broken bones are common in this breed as well as some eye diseases.
