Dogs are territorial animals and like to protect their environment and family. Your puppy will start to mark territory as early as 3 months of age. Both male and female dogs mark territory using a small amount of urine to mark territory. There are a number of reasons that your pet may display this behaviour.

Why your dog marks territory

There are a number of medical reasons that your pet could be marking so it’s important to make sure your pet has a clean bill of health by taking them for a checkup at your local Greencross Vets.

Some dogs mark when they recognise other dog smells in their environment. Your pet’s environment doesn’t necessarily mean your home and backyard but can include other places such as regular walking track, a friend’s home or a park they usually visit.

New and exciting situations may also trigger marking. Some male dogs will mark when in the company of female dogs (especially if they are on heat) while others will mark only the presences of other male dogs.

If your dog is marking around the house, this could be from a feeling of insecurity.

Tips on how to prevent marking around the house

  • Marking is more likely to occur in unspayed females and unneutered males. It’s also common for female dogs while they are on heat or just before. Having your dog neutered or spayed it can reduce the incidence of territorial marking but will not necessarily stop the behaviour.
  • Socialisation is a good way to help your pet feel less threatened by new people or pets entering the house.  Allow the new person or pet to spend time with your dog but keep them away from your dog’s area until they have had time to bond.
  • Establish yourself as the leader in the pack. Dogs are pack animals and will naturally look for a pack leader. While your dog is a companion and friend, you are the owner of the territory. A pet that understands the pack structure of the house will feel more at ease and respect your boundaries.
  • Clean up the soiled area with a cleaner specifically designed to eliminate urine odour. Visit your local Petbarn store to find the right product for you.
