Originating from Burma, the Birman cat is a fantastic family pet.

Known for their striking blue eyes, these cute cats also possess a docile yet affectionate personality. Birman cats are the kind of friend that will be interested in everything you do and want to be close to you. They are likely to follow you around the house and be very grateful for your attention.

While Burmese cats are known to be quite a vocal breed, Birman cats are much quieter and will communicate with you using a softer meow. They are quite curious and adventurous and, as a result, are best to be kept as indoor cats to keep them safe.

As they have a coat on the longer side, grooming should be a priority for new parents of Birman cats. That said, the coat is very silky, so it’s not likely to mat, which is a bonus. Their blue eyes are definitely their most recognisable feature, followed by their white paws or “mittens”. Their colouring is similar to that of Siamese cats, with accent colours featuring on the face, ears, legs and tail. As with most cat breeds, you should aim for weekly grooming so that you’re not faced with loose hair. Don’t forget to keep an eye on their dental health – brushing their teeth daily is ideal.

Thanks to Birman cats’ friendly nature, they are a great match for families with children and other pets. It’s just really important that you socialise them correctly when you first bring them home. Be sure that you take time to ensure that your Birman cat meets their new family members slowly before you leave them alone.
