Switching litter styles isn’t as simple as buying a new type. With patience and care, you can successfully make a change in just three steps.
Why change litter types?
There are usually two reasons for changing litter types – your cat doesn’t like the litter style you’ve been using, or you as the owner want to make a change. Cats are creatures of habit so it’s highly unlikely you’ll simply be able to swap your litter type. If they have been using the same type of litter for a long time, your cat may feel confused by the new litter and stop using it altogether, which isn’t ideal.
However, there are ways to transition to a new litter type and make sure everyone is happy with the change.
Step 1:
Consider why you’re making the switch and if it’s worthwhile, as change can often be stressful for a cat. Understand the different types of litter. Do you prefer clumping, or non-clumping? Are you after a paper, clay, natural or crystal litter? Make sure you know why you want to change litters and what you are hoping to achieve, as you don’t want to have to unnecessarily go through a transition again.
If it’s your cat that has the issue with the litter and is motivating the change, then consider changing types of litter under the same category – clumping or non-clumping – first, before making a total change and trying a fresh new option. Petbarn has a wide range of litter types available.
Step 2:
Slow and steady is key when it comes to making a change. Try gradually adding new litter to the existing type – switching out 25 per cent of the current litter with the new, then slowly increasing the ratio until you’ve done a complete swap. You could also try leaving a litter tray with the original litter nearby until you know your cat is comfortable with using the new type. Remember: Petbarn has a 100 per cent satisfaction guarantee for all cat litters. If you and your cat aren’t totally satisfied with a new litter, simply return it to the point of purchase for a full refund – no questions asked
Step 3:
Cats are not huge fans of change so this switch will be quite a big deal for them. Try and eliminate any other potentially stressful situations in their life while you’re making the litter swap (for example, moving house or adding a new pet to the family) and they will be more likely to manage the transition calmly.
Knowing the change is complete
Once your cat has used the new litter exclusively for a few days, you can consider the change achieved.
