Cats have developed a reputation as being independent and rather self-determined in the way they behave. However, cats still make great companions, and may suit people looking for more independent pets.

Compared to their canine equivalents, cats require less maintenance – they sleep a lot, don’t need to be walked and are able to use a litter box. However, cats have been our domestic companions for at least 9,000 years, over which time they have come to rely on us to look after them to a degree. At the very least we are required to provide our cats with companionship and mental stimulation, give them food and fresh water, scoop their litter boxes, and care for them if they get sick.

DNA of domestication

In 2014 researches at Washington University School of Medicine published their analysis of the cat genome that revealed DNA evidence of cats’ domestication. Their research shows that cats who would normally prefer to lead solitary lives in the wild were choosing to stay with humans, as humans were feeding and ‘rewarding’ them for keeping away rodents and pests.

Tips for having a more independent cat:

  • Consider adopting an older cat. A kitten of any breed will require a lot of your time and attention, whereas an older cat will already be more self-sufficient and independent.
  • This might sound a little counterintuitive, but it’s worth thinking about getting two cats instead of one. While you’re out of the house they will keep each other entertained and stimulated.
  • Make sure you leave your cat lots of toys to play with while you’re out, because even the most independent cats get bored. Try a scratching post to keep their claws off your furniture.
  • If you are buying a new kitten or cat, go and spend some time with them before you bring them home. Get a sense of their personality, and chat with the experts at your local Petbarn about whether their temperament suits your lifestyle.

Cats with big personalities

A lot of people choose to get cats because they’re allegedly lower-maintenance pets than dogs. However, if you’re thinking about buying a cat, but would like one with a big personality to interact with you, it might be worth considering one of these breeds – they’re all renowned as being affectionate, friendly, and requiring attention:

  • British Shorthair
  • American wirehair
  • Ocicat
  • Russian blue
  • Scottish fold
  • Norwegian forest
  • Maine Coon.
