Bird Health FAQ

Indoor birds generally require worming every 6–12 months, depending on exposure risk. Free-flight or aviary birds should follow a 3–6 month schedule, as they have more contact with wild bird droppings.

Watch for subtle changes such as:

  • Fluffed or ruffled feathers for prolonged periods
  • Reduced appetite or water intake
  • Lethargy, reluctance to perch or climbb
  • Abnormal droppings in colour, consistency or frequency
  • Sneezing, wheezing or nasal discharge

If you notice any of these signs in your bird, contact your veterinarian.

Every day, you should refill food and water bowls with fresh supplies and remove any visible droppings from perches and tray liners. Once a week, remove and disinfect perches, toys and cage liners using bird-safe cleaners and wipe down cage bars, grate and base with warm soapy water. Monthly, perform a deep clean of the entire enclosure, including soak-and-scrub of all removable parts.

Preventative measures include regular cage hygiene, fresh perches and quarantining new birds for 30 days.

Check your bird's vent, under wings and around the face for:

  • Tiny white or red spots
  • Excessive preening or feather loss
  • Visible debris around feathers

Treat infestations with avian-safe mite sprays, powders or liquid treatments available at Petbarn. Follow label directions closely and repeat treatments as recommended.
