‘Cor gi’ is a Welsh word meaning ‘dwarf’. They are among the oldest of herding breeds and the Cardigan Welsh Corgi is characterised by its long tail, which is said to resemble the sleeves of a cardigan. Not to be confused with the Pembroke Welsh Corgi, the Cardigan Welsh Corgi is slightly larger, has a longer, heavier body and head, and rounder ears. They are highly intelligent dogs and take to obedience training very well but can be stubborn and may want to do things in their own time. They are loyal and loving with all family members and love to snuggle after a morning run. They are great pets for children and will be a gentle, sweet playmate.

Spirited, lively and charming dogs, a Cardigan Welsh Corgi is a loyal and loving companion that thrives off daily runs and lap cuddles. They are great with children too.
With moderate exercise, they are great apartment pets and thrive when in the company of their family. If they grow up together, your Cardigan Welsh Corgi is great with other pets but will be territorial with unfamiliar animals. Don’t expect your dog to make friends with humans they don’t know either – they tend to be aloof and reserved with guests. Cardigan Welsh Corgis aren’t big dogs, with an average height of 27-32cms.
Fun fact: Folklore says the Corgi is an enchanted dog that
was used in fairy kingdoms as mounts to pull carts or coaches.
Despite their short legs, they require regular exercise but with only moderate energy levels, you don’t need to worry about a twice-daily vigorous regime. A daily walk and off-leash time in the park is ideal. Prevent them from running up and down stairs when they are a puppy as this can cause back and joint problems. Cardigan Welsh Corgis shed moderately all year round and shed their coat twice a year so keep that vacuum handy. Groom your Corgi by brushing their coat weekly to remove loose hairs.
Scheduled six-monthly health checks and visits to the vet are important to ensure your dog is healthy and happy throughout all life stages. It’s important that together with your veterinarian a preventative healthcare program is determined and maintained based on the individual needs of your canine companion. Cardigan Welsh Corgis are a hardy breed but can be affected by hip dysplasia, eye diseases and obesity.
